Reflection for Good Friday

What is the significance of Good Friday to you?
A beginning to a three-day weekend?
Maybe the start of spring break?
One last chance to buy Easter eggs for Sunday?
Or is it something more?
Is it a day to remember that long ago the combined evils of millennia bore down on the shoulders of one Man?
Does it make you evaluate where you are and where you are going?
How dark is your darkness and do you dare to bring it to Light?
Nearly 2,000 years have passed since that dark day just outside the gates of Jerusalem.
The message of Jesus calls us not only to reflect on His suffering but for us to live out His sacrifice.
We are to crucify ourselves each day to be resurrected in His likeness.
The reason this day is important is because it marks the ultimate expression of God's love for mankind.
For the disciples, hope died on Friday...
...but Sunday is coming.

Know today...

“You may never have proof of your importance but you are more important than you think. There are always those who couldn’t do without you. The rub is that you don’t always know who.”

Take notice...

Last week the College of Cardinals elected the Archbishop of Buenos Aires to be the new supreme head of the Catholic Church.  The new pope took the name of Francis and already there is speculation about possible reforms and changes within Roman Catholicism.  The cardinals vote in a secret ballot inside the Sistine Chapel and then the ballots are burned.  The paper naturally produces white smoke, but chemicals are added to make the smoke black until a new pope is chosen when the paper is burned alone and the white smoke announces the decision to the world.  The chimney on the roof of the Chapel is watched by millions of people around the world to get a glimpse of history.  On Wednesday, a seagull perched on the chimney for part of the day oblivious to the fact that many millions of people were watching its every move.  The seagull became a topic of conversation on the Internet and on cable news.  People began taking photos of the bird and everyone in St. Peter’s Square and watching around the world took notice of it.  For a few moments the clueless seagull was a star.  It didn’t know the significance of where it had perched: it was simply a nice spot to land.  The seagull wasn’t concerned about the future of the Catholic Church: it was just looking for its next meal or a place to nest.
Sometimes in life we are the seagull.  Everyday important things are happening around us and we are missing out on them because we are concerned with the daily grind of life.  Some of us are so caught up in work that we are missing our kids growing up.  Some of us are so caught up in entertainment that we are missing out on spiritual growth.  Some of us are so caught up in the details of daily life that we are missing the beautiful, big picture that is happening all around us.
Resolve this morning: don’t be the seagull.  Be truly present in your life and take full advantage of the opportunities you have to grow and build relationships.  Some moments happen only once and we must be paying attention to receive their reward.

Musical Theatre Friday Jackman-style

Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! filmed from the stage. You will notice this 1998 production includes a pre-Valjean Hugh Jackman. Even as new shows are produced every year, it is important occasionally to go back to some of the great hits of days gone by. Currently Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella (which was originally the first musical produced for television) is now on Broadway.

Words cannot be unsaid,
Deeds cannot be undone,
Life cannot be unlived.

Perhaps those truths should fill us more with a sense of purpose than with a sense of regret.

Speak with purpose, act with purpose, live with purpose -
this week and always.

Best way to make a difference...

Many of us have tried to learn a new skill, lose weight or clean up our homes.  We may look at websites dedicating to learning new ways and techniques to improve our lives.  We may read books on subjects like fitness and organization.  We may consult experts about what ways of self-improvement have worked for them.  We may talk with friends to learn their secrets of living richer, fuller lives.  There are so many things we can do to prepare for a project but one is the most important:
Many times in life we spend so much time preparing to do something that we never get around to actually doing it.  We want everything to be perfect before we begin, and, since that perfection never comes, we never actually do anything.  What diet is the most successful?  The one you start and stick with.  What is the best way to clean out a closet?  Start taking stuff out and separating it into piles.  This principle is also true in our spiritual lives.  Some of us are waiting to get everything figured out before we make a commitment.  That day of total certainty never comes.  At some point, we have to step out in faith and begin the process of working to build a spiritual life.  Don’t let the intimidating prospect of doing something perfectly keep you from doing something well.  Resolve to start and take a step forward today.  To finish the journey, you must begin and no matter how far you are going each journey begins with a single step.
